सेंट बेसिल कैथेड्रल मॉस्को, St. Basil’s Cathedral, Moscow. Trending Places to see in 2022
The most notable architectural work in Moscow is St. Basil's Cathedral. It is also known as "Pokrovsky Cathedral" or "The Cathedral of the Virgin's Intercession by the Moat." It is the most well-known Russian structure. This Cathedral serves as an honorable symbol of Russia's past, present, and future, much like the Eiffel Tower serves as an honorable symbol of France's past, present, and future.

The cathedral is located in Red Square, directly across from the Ivory Gate Chapel. The history of St. Basil's Cathedral began in 1555 with an order from Ivan IV ("Ivan the Terrible") to commemorate the fall of Kazan, the Mongol Empire's last surviving hold on European territory. According to historians, Ivan the Terrible blinded the architect of St. Basil's Cathedral shortly after it was completed in order to prevent him from building another cathedral as spectacular as that. Its sides were originally made of wood, but during Catherine II the Great's reign, the walls were rebuilt in the same stone as now, with swirling colors and decorations.

The Cathedral was closed, the bells melted, and the arch-priest was executed when the Bolsheviks took power. St. Basil's has remained a symbol of the Russian Orthodox Church, spirituality, and patriotism despite the hardships that have always seemed to surround it. When Stalin determined that the Cathedral was in the way of his military parades, it was threatened again. The demolition plan was drawn up, but the architect threatened to cut his throat on the Cathedral's steps if it was destroyed.

Surprisingly, Stalin changed his mind, and Piotr Baranovsky, the brave architect who saved St. Basil's, was sentenced to a few years in prison.

Today's walls are more than 400 icons painted by the most prominent schools of Novgorod and Moscow between the 14th and 19th centuries. The domes are part of nine distinct chapels within the cathedral, and each dome represents the attack on Kazan. The cathedral's design is inspired by Jerusalem's architectural styles and has deep religious significance. The eight domes that surround the ninth dome in a round pattern appear to resemble a star when viewed from the top.

A short route connects one alter to the next, traveling through a wooden spiral staircase so carefully disguised in a wall that it was only discovered during the cathedral's restoration in 1970.

The interior of St Basil's Cathedral is quite different from the outside, with simple decorations and short corridors.
The cathedral has been damaged several times throughout its history by fires, looting, and other occurrences. According to mythology, Napoleon planned to bring St. Basil's Cathedral back to France with him. He instead ordered his army to destroy it so that no one else could inhabit it, as this was not possible. His army was ready for battle and had lighted the explosives, but a weird rain shower stopped any explosions.

The Soviets recognized the church as a significant and irreplaceable national monument. It was restored extensively and turned into an architecture, history, politics, and religion museum. Unlike many historic structures,
