Turkey's Aspendos Roman Theatre is an exquisitely maintained Ancient Roman landmark. In fact, it appears to be virtually entirely undamaged.

This Roman amphitheatre, which can still hold up to 15,000 spectators, was formerly a part of the city of Aspendos, which was established by ancient Greeks from Argos and was first recorded by the Hittites around 800 BC.
The city prospered even more under the Romans, and in the middle of the second century AD, Aspendos Roman Theatre was constructed there.



The theatre was constructed in thehe reign of the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius (160 to 180). (160 to 180). We are able to identify the architect as Zenon, the son of Theodorus, thanks to inscriptions on the building's walls. The inscriptions also reveal that two wealthy brothers provided funding for the Greek architect, who was born in Aspendos.
