China made wide-ranging amendments to its counterespionage law last week which will allow, among other things, exit bans against anyone under investigation. The law, scheduled to come into effect on July 1, has left the United States concerned which has sought a clarification on the legislation. China’s top legislative body National People’s Congress (NPC) passed the revised Counter-espionage Law following three days of deliberations amid rising tensions with US-ally Taiwan. This was first time the important legislation was updated since 2014. What more does the law say?
