(22 Feb 2020) Waving Chinese flags, several dozen people on Saturday attended a concert in Serbia in support of China in its struggle to contain a new virus that started in the Asian country but has spread globally.
Serbian government officials and China's ambassador in Serbia were present at the small event on Saturday organized among the light installations set up for the Chinese New Year last month in a park in central Belgrade.
Globally, nearly 78,000 people have been infected with the coronavirus in 29 countries, and more than 2,300 have died.
This has fueled anti-Chinese sentiments around the globe amid fears of further spread of the disease.
In Belgrade, the deputy Mayor Goran Vesic said that "Belgrade is thinking about China."
"We will be by your side, so you can overcome these difficulties," said Vesic. "When China is well, Serbia will be well also."
Serbia's populist authorities have maintained close political and economic links with China.
China has sided with Serbia in its refusal to accept the Western-backed independence of the former province of Kosovo, while the Balkan country is also part of China's ambitious Belt and Road investment initiative designed to boost its clout.
Chinese ambassador to Serbia Chen Bo thanked Serbia for the support.
"Chinese people will not be defeated," she said. "China will be stronger after it overcomes the epidemic."
No Serbian citizens so far have been confirmed as infected with the virus.
About a dozen towns in Italy effectively went into lockdown after the deaths of two people infected with the virus.
Some Belgrade residents who came to the concert said China should not be blamed for the outbreak.
"I think that something like this can happen to anyone ... not only to China," said pensioner Slavica Jovanovic, "I think that we have to offer full support."
