Oerlikon is the center of Zurich North and an important urban secondary center whose catchment area extends far beyond the city limits into the middle Glatt Valley and thus the airport region.

Until the mid-19th century, Oerlikon was a modest hamlet, a few houses around the village lime tree, and until 1872 it was part of the municipality of Schwamendingen. Only then did it become an independent municipality.

Oerlikon was shaped by the expansion of the railroad network, which in turn was a prerequisite for the development of industry. Parallel to the expansion of the factories, north of the train station, residential quarters and shopping streets grew on the other side.

After 1980, planning for the conversion of the factory areas began. Around the turn of the century, the Neu-Oerlikon quarter was created there with about 5000 inhabitants and 9000 jobs. Today, the Oerlikon train station is one of the largest in Switzerland. It provides access to the quarter's approximately 25,000 workplaces as well as to the extensive shopping, leisure and sports facilities.
