In this video, we visit some more sights just outside of Baku. One of them is the Zoroastrian Fire Temple called Atashgah in Surakhany, Azerbaijan. This temple was built centuries ago by Zoroastrians and was destroyed and rebuilt several times, mainly because of the Muslim conquest of Persia (of which Azerbaijan was then a part). Millions of Zoroastrians were either killed, converted, or made to escape their homeland. Some of them found refuge in India and are called Parsis. This is one of the very few surviving Zoroastrian temples today, the biggest of its kind. This was rebuilt by Indian travelers and merchants (mainly Hindus) as a place of their worship and stay during their business travel along the ancient Silk Road in the 17th and the 18th century. The temple was again abandoned for many years in modern times due to the natural fire running out and then was reinvented as a museum by the USSR after Indira Gandhi visited the temple in the 1970s.
