Introducing SIBIU | ROMANIA’S Beautiful Mediaeval City!

Next on my Romanian road trip is the beautiful old mediaeval city of Sibiu where I took a walking tour through the upper and lower towns and enjoyed a peaceful morning at Piata Mare.

After the excitement of driving the Transfagarasan Highway I stopped by the city of Sibiu to learn a little about its history and to take a walking tour around the two main areas - the upper and lower towns. Connected by a series of tunnels, steps and narrow passageways the historic centre of Sibiu is a mixture of quaint marketplaces and grand central squares lined with restaurants, coffee shops, churches and halls.

Sibiu is known as the town with eyes owing to the oddly shaped additional roof windows you find in some of the buildings - it's a different kind of architecture than I’ve seen before and certainly a spectacle to see. Since 2004 the historic centre of Sibiu has been a UNESCO world heritage site.

Whilst visiting the Upper Town I bought a ticket to enter the 12th century Tour du Conseil (Council Tower of Sibiu) which offered some great views of the city. Inside I found lots of photos and artefacts from Sibiu’s history. I continued exploring and found a pretty little area around Goldsmiths' Passageway - it was also a route that seemed to connect the upper town to the lower.

Spending half a day in Sibiu allowed me to get a good flavour of the city and see lots of its key landmarks such as Piata Mare and the Liar's Bridge (Podul Minciunilor). It's easily possible to see Sibiu in one day and is fast becoming one of the best places to visit in Europe that’s not on the regular tourist trail.
