Some European leaders have responded to comments made by former US president Donald Trump regarding the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) over the weekend.

On Saturday, Trump stated if elected to the country's top office, he wouldn't protect NATO countries from Russia if they don't "pay up." Trump commented at a rally in South Carolina, adding, “I would encourage them (Russia) to do whatever the hell they want.”

In response, European Union's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell emphasized that NATO cannot be an "a la carte" military alliance dependent on the whims of the US president.

Roberta Metsola, the European Parliament President, suggested that regardless of who leads the next American administration after this year's election, it is essential to be strong enough to defend each other and added “Any statement of that sort needs to be recognized with the danger that it brings, but also a steadfastness on our regard that we need to do more, just in case we need to be alone.”

Meanwhile, Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk stressed that there is no alternative to the partnership between Europe, NATO, and the United States for facing mounting security risks.

Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas also called Trump's comments a wake-up call for NATO members who haven't invested as much in defense.
