Top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi says there are "some forces" that do not want Russia-Ukraine peace talks to succeed. Addressing global leaders at the Munich Security Conference, Wang said China will issue its own position via a political settlement, and called for negotiation instead of sanctions to end the conflict.

Wang Yi also slammed the U.S. handling of the balloon incident as "unimaginable" and "hysterical." Tensions between the world's two largest economies flared after the White House ordered an F-22 fighter jet to shoot down what it suspected to be a surveillance balloon off the coast of South Carolina. Wang Yi said the balloon was a strayed civilian airship, and the U.S. reaction violated international norms.
