Chinese President Xi Jinping wrapped up his visit to Italy, Monaco and France on March 26, 2019.
During his six-day visit, Italy became the first founding EU member state to join China’s “Belt and Road Initiative” and agreed on deals involving two ports that are strategically valuable to China. European aircraft manufacturer Airbus also signed a US$35 billion jet deal with China while Xi was in France.
The European tour took place amid growing scepticism about China’s global influence, and after the European Commission branded China a “systemic rival”. But after a meeting with Xi, EU leaders said they wanted to take an active role in the belt and road plan.
