(5 Mar 2019) Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis said on Tuesday he is not impressed with French President Emmanuel Macron's push to persuade voters they should support parties that will strengthen the European Union.
The French leader on Tuesday offered ideas for safeguarding elections, managing migration, and making Europe a leader in combating climate change.
Babis told The Associated Press that he thinks the EU should focus on fundamental issues, such as defence and making the bloc's common trading market work better.
He did not expect other Czechs to react positively to Macron's views - "quite the contrary", he added.
Babis also called Brexit a "bad thing" and said it will weaken the European Union.
Ahead of his meeting with Trump in the White House on Thursday, Babis said the United States should use its influence and position as a UN Security Council permanent member to help negotiate peace in Syria.
Babis said the European Union as a bloc doesn't have such a negotiation power in the Middle East.
The Czech Prime Minister also spoke about the controversy around the Chinese tech company Huawei, saying a careful approach should be taken.
