(5 Mar 2019) French President Emmanuel Macron's plea for a stronger European Union went out to publications "of record" in 28 countries on Tuesday, including Italy where it was published in the "Corriere della Sera".
The piece was printed with the headline "Brexit, a lesson - Europe wakes up and defends itself".
Opinions on the streets of Rome on Tuesday were mixed about Macron's article.
Some people the Associated Press spoke to appeared to welcome the French President's call for unity, while others disliked the idea that Macron was acting as a "leader of Europe" by publishing the piece.
In the article, the French leader, who campaigned as a strong supporter of the European Union, called Brexit a symbol of the problems plaguing Europe, alleging that a "lie" and "irresponsibility" led to Britain's scheduled departure from the EU at the end of the month.
He advised voters in the May 23-26 EU parliament elections to reject nationalist parties that "offer nothing."
