Pillar-frame or short-leg shear wall structures may be vulnerable to earthquakes, as most buildings that collapsed in southern Türkiye are of these types, said Wang Tao, an engineering machinist from China now taking part in the rescue work in Türkiye. Wang, also the deputy director with the Institute of Engineering Mechanics of the China Earthquake Administration, listed a few possibilities why lots of tall buildings collapsed in the earthquakes and said these structure were likely to have multiplied the devastation.
